Description
ANTIQUE PFLUEGER PROGRESS MODEL 1183 RAISED PILLAR SKELETON FLY REEL.Satin gun metal (brass) spool, back & foot, with raised pillars, tear-shaped cutouts in spool, cross back plate, celluloid black handle. This is the “old reliable” classic Pflueger Progress 1183 and likely is post-WWI.
This 60-yard all-brass reel has “PFLUEGER”, the Bulldog symbol Trade Mark and “PROGRESS” on top of the base and “60” indicating a 60-yard line capacity stamped on the underside of the base. The Bulldog has a “small” head. Reel is 2 ½” diameter. No wobble to reel. Slight bind in reel movement. The spool is very slightly off-center, less than one millimeter. It may be possible to re-align the spool and the frame, but I will leave that to a future owner – please see pics. All parts work, including drag clicker. Nice patina to metal.
Spool pillars have slight verdigris green due to line left on reel for some years - please see pics. Reel has not been cleaned, other than to put a drop of Reel-X oil on the shaft and cog, and to wipe the reel with a soft cotton cloth.
It was my grandfather’s reel. He worked for the Santa Fe and spent his summer vacations in Montana at his father-in-law’s home in Bozeman. He fished the Madison River with this reel in the ‘teens of the early 20
th
century – please see pics. It’s been in my family ever since and was likely used by my father on trips to Colorado, where his uncle lived. I, however, grew up fishing lakes in Wisconsin, Canada and the Blue Ridge mountains using Garcia Mitchell spinning reels, never using the Pflueger. Thanks for looking!
